Received Flowers? Keep Them Looking Great With These 3 Tips

Most people love receiving fresh flowers on special days or just any day really. However, one of the most frustrating things is when that beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers begin to wilt away. Luckily, with the right conditions and some special TLC, it is possible to make those flowers last a little bit longer so that you enjoy them a few extra days. Here is what you need to know and do:

1. Make Sure to Replenish AND Change the Water Frequently.

All plants -- including flowers -- drink lots of water. Fresh flowers, especially if they make up a large arrangement, may drink the entire vase of water within the first 24 to 48 hours. Therefore, to ensure that your waters have plenty of water to drink and stay fresh and vivid, you need to keep the vase filled with water. Also, bacteria can get in the water, so it is a good idea to change the water every few days. This is true even if there is still water in the vase. It is better for the flowers to drink fresh water than dirty water.

2. Trim the Stems Before Placing in the Vase and When Changing the Water.

Hopefully, the florist trimmed the stems when they made the floral arrangement for you. However, you can't be for certain. Plus, they have sat all day in the office and then rode in the hot car on the way to your home, so they have probably dried out a bit. When the bottoms of the stems dry out, they can die, which makes it difficult for water to be absorbed through the bottoms of the stems. This means that the flowers can't get water. To help ensure that your flowers get the water that they need to stay vivid and fresh, you need to cut about half an inch off of the stems before placing them in a vase when you get home. Also, the stems can continue to break down over time, so it is a good idea to cut them stems off every few days to ensure the stems continue to absorb an adequate amount of water. A good time to do this is when you change the water in the vase.

3. Avoid Placing Your Flowers in Direct Sunlight or Near Heat.

It isn't uncommon to want to place your recently-received and beautiful flower arrangement in front of your sunny windowsill. After all, many flowers love sunlight. However, flowers that have been cut are not like potted flowers and plants. They don't like sunlight. In fact, the sun and heat will speed up the flower arrangement's demise, which is the last thing that you want to do. So, try to keep your flowers away from the sun and heat. Instead, place them in an area that is a cool and dark.
